Repetitive, deadpan documentary projects like Ed Ruscha's Twenty-Six Gasoline Stations or Lee Friedlander's Self-Portraits became popular with conceptual art in the '60's. But thanks to the new display options of the net and flash this impulse is being reinvigorated.
"For almost three years, Dean Baldwin has marked the waking moment of his day with a self-portrait taken by a digital camera hooked up to his alarm clock.
Baldwin's intention is to point out the subtle differences in the sameness of our daily routines; the tired eyes may look similar, but the bear is scruffier and his sheets have been changed. His Alarm Clock Self-portraits (SnoozeButton) is part of a broader practice in which he obsessively documents life's habitually recurring and more mundane moments."
