Here's the idea. You're in a foreign city, and as they say in orienteering, you've “lost contact with the map.” You're dead lost. What to do? Simply whip out your camphone and take a picture of the most easily recognized monument. Next, send the snap off to an image identification program that that susses out the locale.
Then be thankful for the nice little map the computer sends back to help you wayfind yourself to a boot of pilsner or some outsized pastry.
That's what they are up to at the Inhaltsbasierte Bildsuche für Fußgängernavigation. The site's in German, but we already know how to have it translated with the click of a mouse.
I'm not sure how this will work in the United States, but imagine giving it a try anyway.
